Most New Zealand homes have ceiling insulation and new homes now also include wall insulation which is installed at the time of construction. However, for homes with suspended floors, it is one element of the envelope that may not be insulated and this can contribute to as much as 20% of heat loss in winter. A polished timber floor looks warm and inviting – but looks can be deceiving. Without insulation, your flooring material is the only thing between you and the elements. Which Optimo product is right for me?

A joist is a length of timber or steel that runs parallel to the wall and supports the structure of your home.

Step 1: Measure width between joists.

Get under your floor and measure the distance between joists, measuring from the middle of each joist. The widths will most likely equal one of two options; 450mm or 600mm.

The appropriate segment sizes for the above joist spaces are as follows;

  • 450mm joist = 415mm segment
  • 600mm joist = 565mm segment

Note: for joist spacings between 450mm and 600mm, then a 565mm Optimo segment should be used and cut to suit. In all cases, the insulation should be trimmed so that its 5mm MORE than the space of the opening to allow for a snug fit. You should ensure there are no gaps between the insulation and the joists or abutting edges of insulation. If the insulation is too loose, you can trim a piece from the edge of another segment and use this as a packer.
