Bradford acoustics star at State Theatre Centre of WA
Bradford insulation provided superior acoustic performance in this award-winning performing arts venue, a defining architectural feature in Perth.
The State Theatre Centre of WA opened in January 2011 and is located in Northbridge in Perth. This exciting design was unanimously selected from 40 submissions in an international competition. The creation of this centre was heralded as a defining moment in the cultural history of the state.

Noise control was key for both internal and external walls
The competition-winning design masterfully met the brief. It was done using a palette of natural materials including black metal, curved timber and gilded bronze together with concrete, dark brick and glass. The interiors and exteriors are equally appreciated by the public, as well as cleverly aligned and linked thanks to the transparency of the façade.
The facility includes:
- 575 seat Heath Ledger Theatre
- The flexible performance space, Studio Underground, capable of seating 200+
- The Courtyard, a multi-purpose outdoor space as well as public spaces, rehearsal rooms, foyers and bars

The beautiful interiors are kept comfortable by Bradford's superior thermal and acoustic performance
Built on a small site, the design stacked the performance spaces on top of one another to maximise use of space. As a result, internal acoustic insulation, as well as insulation from the surrounding busy road and rail areas, were crucial to the Centre's success.
Bradford insulation products were used extensively throughout the building to provide superior acoustic performance in areas such as wall panels in the main theatre, an acoustic wall around the wings and in walls and ceiling in the service areas.
